Five ways to be a better leader

There is a saying in life that the “days are busy but the years are short” and when it comes to retail, this is absolutely the truth. After all, how often have years flown by and you’ve looked back only to regret how you managed your employees or other store responsibilities you had hoped to improve.

With employees and volunteers being essentially your store ambassadors, there’s no better time than now to strengthen your management skills. To help, consider these five tips:

Evaluate your employee scenario

Ask yourself this straightforward question — and give yourself an honest answer: Are you satisfied with the performance of your employees?

While it’s possible some employees will likely stand out among others for their positive attributes, it’s also likely many others will stand out for just the opposite reasons. Analyze your entire staff and identify the strengths, weaknesses and windows of opportunities. This first step can help lead you to the many others as you begin your journey to strengthen your employee team.

Create an evaluation checklist

When you’re analyzing your employees and their performance, it’s important to be consistent and evaluate everyone against the same criteria. Have a checklist or evaluation form to help you review each individual employee with the same standards and expectations. Ranking skills and store responsibilities on a scale of 1 to 5 provides a good baseline, with 1 being poor performance, 2 offering below average, 3 identifying average, 4 recognized as above average and 5 being outstanding. (Note: Avoid a 1-10 scale. The precision on the 0-5 rating is much easier.)

As you begin to create your checklist, consider points like store operations, customer service, social media, merchandising and marketing. All responsibilities should be included, as well as other key details such as being on time to work.

Schedule staff reviews

Once you’ve completed your checklist and filled out the evaluations, it’s crucial to schedule a one-on-one review with each employee to share your findings. Use this opportunity to discuss their strengths and weaknesses, as well as to communicate store goals, expectations, and employee responsibilities. Allow time for your employees to share their thoughts, whether in response to your review or regarding their employment or store concerns in general. Maintain a positive tone while also reinforcing the standards you’ve set for your business.

At a minimum, reviews should be conducted annually. Ideally, quarterly or bi-annually.

If you are doing your job as a manager, nothing should come as a surprise to your staff on the day of their performance reviews.

It’s absolutely true that managers should be giving employees feedback throughout the year and shouldn’t blindside them with criticism in an annual review that they haven’t heard before. As a rule, managers should strive throughout the year to ensure that nothing in an evaluation will be surprising. Every single day is a an opportunity for a micro-review. A good manager will consistently guides staff in areas of improvement. Nothing should be a surprise on the day of the review.

Deliver an all-store team meeting

Schedule a meeting when the store is closed to bring everyone together. During this session, formally introduce store expectations, especially if this is a new initiative. Introducing an employee manual can be beneficial. For those preferring a less formal approach, consider a “Top Ten” list outlining the ten essential behaviors or practices the store expects from every employee. Display this list in a visible area where employees can regularly see it, ensuring they are reminded of these expectations each time they work (away from customers, of course). Regardless of the method you choose, aim to foster a positive and uplifting team morale while providing employees with clear leadership and direction. Emphasize the importance of teamwork and clearly define any sales goals you have set for the team.

Set daily goals

When managing employees, it’s essential to provide goals that are clear, accessible, and easy to understand. While aiming for “our best year yet” sounds positive, it lacks specificity. To achieve this overarching goal, integrate daily goals that align with it. Utilize data from your point-of-sale system and past sales years to set daily sales targets that your employees can aim for. Additionally, establish daily objectives such as merchandising specific areas, sending customer thank-you notes, and overseeing general store operations. By setting and communicating these daily goals, you’ll foster productivity and, ultimately, help your team achieve the broader business objectives.

A final thought

When leading your team, consider the leadership experience your employees are having. Reflecting on your leadership style helps you understand your employees’ behaviors better. Aim to develop a leadership approach that both you and your team can be proud of. This will benefit your store, enhance employee satisfaction, and contribute to a more dynamic and productive work environment, ultimately leading to increased sales.

7 tips for captivating in-store signage

Gift Shop Plus shared seven great tips for creating great signage that not only inform but help drive sales. We took a few and built on them with our own suggestions:

Create professional looking signage. Print in color – avoid handwritten – do not tape on walls or shelving, don’t lean up against products. Acrylic photo frames are cheap, easy to change up, and look professional.

Tailor signage to resonate with your audience through specific language, colors and imagery.

Position signage so they can be read by wheelchair customers.

Use colors and fonts large visible for customers with limited vision. Use easy-to-read fonts and high-contrast colors.

Keep signage concise, clear, short. Use sentence fragments, drop nonessential verbiage, use short words.

Create focal points in the store by placing attention-grabbing signs near popular and high-margin products.

Treat your signage as you would your displays. Cheap signage can cheapen a beautiful display in seconds.

Your shop has it’s own branding, at least it should. Maintain consistency with your shop’s brand colors, fonts, imagery and logo. A cohesive, visual identity subconsciously calms and soothes shoppers. You’ve heard that a messy store is an uninviting store. Studies show this literally repel shoppers. Same applies to signage.

Signage can be used for emotional marketing, your #1 marketing tool. Use signs to highlight the stories behind your products, allowing customers to connect with them emotionally.

What are the most powerful emotions to evoke when marketing to a customer of a hospital gift shop? First, what is your customer base? Medical staff, patients, family members. Next, what emotions are they likely to experience? Stress, grief, anxiety and fear, uncertainty, relief, gratitude and celebration. We suggest your signage speak to the emotions of humor, empathy, calmness, love, comfort, hope, wellness and comfort.

A. Has anyone else set up a “temporary” store?

Q. Has anyone else set up a “temporary” store? Construction started on a large addition/renovation to our hospital, for 24-30 months. It is going to affect our volunteer gift shop. We are able to set up a small “store” in a hallway, which will require us to secure overnight. – Martha Burke, Rome Health, Rome, NY. 130 beds. 1/17/24

We purchased a used department store kiosk, bought an iPad & square credit card reader, and set up in a hallway. Snacks were the biggest seller. We also included a few seasonal items, and accessories. Our customers miss it! – Michaela Kanoski, CHI CUMC Bergan Mercy, Omaha, NE. 394 beds. 3/25/24

We had to set up a temporary store in what typically is a small waiting area during a 6 month construction. I only brought in my very best sellers and put all other inventory in storage. We had a small variety of greeting cards, candy, some plush, willow tree and other smaller items. It wasn’t ideal and sales were obviously low but we moved into a bigger and better space after the construction that made it worth it.  – Sarah Ryan. 3/19/24

When we had a remodel we were allowed to set up a temp shop in a conference room. It was minimal. Food and candy is our #1 seller. We kept most of that and and small seasonal display and some other go too items. We stocked and switched out items frequently. – Noelle. 3/19/24

We used to have a cart that volunteers would take around the hospital. It had jewelry, flowers, candy, and other assorted items. The objective was to offer convenience to staff who found it difficult to leave their area to go to the Gift Shop during their shift. Sales were either cash or check only.  – Peter Waugh. 3/19/24

They moved our to a portion of a conference room for about 6-8 months. How long are they relocating you? Do you get a bigger shop? When I worked at a kiosk at the mall years ago, we had a tarp like that went around and had a lock on it.  – Tricia E. 2/24/24

Our shop was closed for about 4 months in 2022. I found a vacated space and used it to set up a temporary shop. We mainly sold our logo wear and then had a “garage sale” to move inventory that had been in our storage room for more than a couple years. – Alison K.  2/27/24

Major trends that will shape retail in 2024

There has been a lot of talk lately about retail trends for 2024. We found several articles touching on varying points, some overlapping and some not. We can’t print them all, but here’s a a few trends to look out for in the context of hospital gift shops:

82% of global consumers surveyed agree that receiving communications from local businesses makes them feel more connected to the business. Think social media!

Self-checkout will grow massively in sectors beyond grocery and fast fashion. Anywhere there are queues, this tech can make a difference.

In addition to an online store and brick-and-mortar locations, retailers are capturing sales and winning the loyalty of customers through social media channels.

Retail is embracing recommerce with retailers integrating resale, rental, and repair initiatives to boost revenue and respond to growing customer demand.

Consumers will seek products with authentic recommendations. People are tired of the conformist approach to shopping where everyone is fed the algorithms. They want products that fit them and that tell their story.

Retailers are jumping into AI to create personalized marketing with micro-segmentation and building communities. Small businesses can use AI tools to save time and money. For example, to generate product descriptions. Gmail, Shopify and Canva are also integrating AI assistance into their apps.

Prepare for Gen Alpha, the largest generation ever with solid values and will make purchasing decisions based on those values.

Consumers will seek inclusive environments that demonstrate a mutual commitment between retailers and employees.

Consumers have “green fatigue” creating an increased awareness in real sustainability, versus faux green marketing.

What exactly is in your shop window?

In an ideal retail scenario, you would be excited about products at market, mentally plan a store window around them, order extra and locate display props all in the same day. But, that’s a dream world. Realistically, it’s a lot to think about and a big effort.

Here are some ideas for managing and tracking store window displays:

Catalog your window merchandise

  1. Create a list of every item that goes into a window display. This should include apparel sizes and the retail price of every item.
  2. Take a picture of the final window display for reference. Printed it and place in a binder with the list of merchandise.
  3. Write helpful notes on the list like, “Porcelain bunny boxes, north window – stored on the top left shelf in the back room.”
  4. Assign someone to check the stock of “window items” regularly and remove items with little or no in-store stock. Also update the before-mentioned list.

These procedures help when customers ask about an item they saw in the window.

What not to put in your windows

  1. Staff. You don’t want staff climbing in window displays while a customer waits!
  2. Unless you purchased a statement item specifically for your window, do not put one-offs in your window displays.
  3. Do not create a display around products for which you do not have adequate stock in-store. Think a product will be a top seller? Order extra if you plan to use them in a window display.

How Hydra Health is transforming the hospital gift shop

Retail TouchPoints / Feb 21, 2024

Hospitals and medical campuses typically look at retail as an essentially insignificant element in their patient, visitor and employee experiences. That translates into gift shops and cafeteria spaces that are often sterile environments featuring the same mediocre-quality products and pre-packaged foods. Marie Kloor and her firm, Hydra Health, are focused on changing that.

“Our mission is to transform spaces that have traditionally been kind of an afterthought and turn them into beautiful, customer-centric and revenue-generating spaces,” Kloor said in an interview with Retail TouchPoints. “Most funding goes into clinical operations, but a huge part of your experience of being on site is non-clinical, and it’s low-hanging fruit to really rethink hospital retail.”

Stores are curated and merchandised to reflect a high-end boutique or spa. Credit: Dan Burke

Taking inspiration from the spa and wellness markets, Hydra Health aims to bring innovation into hospitals and medical campuses, transforming their retail spaces into high-value, amenity-driven environments. As part of HHP (Health Hospitality Partners), a healthcare amenities company, Hydra Health has implemented its experience model inside the Geisinger Henry Cancer Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA and Penn Medicine’s Hospital in Philadelphia, with plans for further expansion in 2024 and beyond.

“We focus on bringing in a retail experience that feels modern and value-additive to the employees, patients and visitors on-site,” Kloor explained. “And then we expand that to create amenities that actually serve and provide what people need.”

Applying ‘Retail 101’ to healthcare environments

Because these spaces are often volunteer-driven and sometimes perceived by leadership as a cost center, Hydra Health has developed a business model in which it funds the build-out and design of the spaces and develops a revenue- and profit-sharing model with the healthcare facility.

“We’re not asking for an investment from the hospital because we know they already have a lot of other things they’re using their budgets for, and we also have certain brand and design standards we want to uphold,” Kloor said.

Stores also include a curated product mix that includes personal care items, apparel, snacks and refreshments, books, magazines and gifts, to ensure there’s an array of products that meet the needs of all possible visitors.

In typical gift shops, “you see a lot of things behind glass display cases, but what people are usually looking for is some deodorant or even a hairbrush,” she said. “So what we’ve done, which is kind of Retail 101, is see who our users are, apply more of a design-thinking approach, and then build our product selection and stores around the users. This ends up generating more revenue for the hospital. We’re moving from a cost center to a profit center. While this model is new and innovative for the hospital and healthcare industry, it is, in a sense, applying some of the most basic retail principles.”

Hydra Health conducts a series of focus groups with people it knows will be using the spaces daily. However, interviewing patients and visitors is difficult due to HIPAA rules, so the team extensively engages with guest services and patient advocates within the hospitals and medical campuses. This data informs how diverse assortments need to be, because these stores serve both long-term stays, which sometimes require needs like sleepwear and bedding, to short-term needs like toothbrushes and denture glue.

Creating an ‘on-site respite’

Patients, visitors, nurses and doctors will doubtless agree that medical environments can sometimes feel emotionally draining and overwhelming. That is why taking cues from spas and wellness spaces is so critical to Hydra Health’s design aesthetic. With soft lighting, neutral color palettes, rich textures and uncluttered displays, the spaces are designed to feel welcoming and light.

“Our goal is that, when people walk into our stores, they know they’re in a non-clinical space,” Kloor said. “We design our stores so that they could fit in downtown Manhattan or a cute boutique area; we do not follow the hospital design guidelines.”

Lighting is especially crucial, since natural light is often lacking in these spaces, Kloor noted. “We’re often in an interior area so it’s all about making things feel light and bright, leading with a more welcoming experience and removing the yellow lights that you find in clinical settings. We also think about texture and adding greenery – real or fake – wherever possible.”

Depending on the distinct needs of a specific community, Hydra Health also can include amenities and services such as lounge spaces, lactation rooms, beauty bars, fitness suites, play areas for kids and even respite rooms for nurses and doctors to disconnect. One thing that Kloor and her team discovered in their focus groups is that, while all facilities and medical centers put patients and visitors at the center of their retail and cafeteria design processes, they often overlook what their employees want.

“About 80% of our repeat users are the employees and staff, so bridging that gap, and building these spaces for the employees that are going to be there not only every day, but multiple times a day, is a little bit different,” Kloor said. “You hear a lot about nurses being on strike and healthcare employees getting burnt out, eating out of vending machines, drinking stale coffee…what can we do to help create experiences that are going to help attract and retain employees as well as help manage clinical operations?”

Design concepts and even merchandise assortments are further customized based on the facility’s geographic location. For example, at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia, there is a corner dedicated to Philly sports, while the cancer center in Northeastern Pennsylvania has a relaxing lounge space and even a beauty bar with non-toxic products and wigs for cancer patients.

“We wanted people to feel like if they needed a break from the clinical side of things, they could come in and lounge,” Kloor explained. “We also have respite rooms open to staff, patients and visitors to come take a nap or just have a moment. I think staff uses them to take a break and have active recovery. When you’re on a shift in a hospital, you’re never off; but with these spaces, you can remove yourself and have a chance to be refreshed.”

Credit: Dan Burke

Taking a data-driven approach to new formats

While Hydra Health takes many of its design cues from high-end fashion boutiques and spas, Kloor also is inspired by more utilitarian formats and experiences, especially to serve nurses, doctors and other hospital employees.

“We’ve taken some inspiration from a more modern airport for those who are walking through and need something in a pinch,” Kloor said “They’re not necessarily looking for a drawn-out shopping experience, so we’re trying to merge in that modern airport convenience.”

For example, offering fast and convenient payment experiences via mobile devices or even employee badges takes cues from airport retail’s “scan and go” models. Hydra Health is strategizing a “next iteration” format concept that includes different fully automated stores and other tech-driven spaces.

“For the future, we’re looking at a hub-and-spoke model, where we have this Hydra Health core retail shop and then have outposts in other areas of the hospital, where it’s a micro-market that is all self-checkout or that uses video camera technology, or a kiosk that can pop up in different areas of the hospital for different occasions,” Kloor explained. “Although we want to be a hub, we can’t reach every area now.”

Hydra Health uses data to inform which models work and where there is future opportunity for experience innovation. The company measures success by looking at trends among its different users groups: hospital staff and employees, hospital visitors and patients. Then the Hydra team can drill into top-performing categories and use traditional retail metrics, such as monthly performance and revenue per square foot, to further optimize the store layout, experience and services.

Although profit is a key metric, Hydra Health doesn’t plan to lose sight of its North Star: loyalty. To keep a close eye on this, the company has implemented various channels for its diverse consumer base to share thoughts, opinions and general feedback.

“We have rewards cards, we do community programming, we have suggestion boxes and a QR code people can scan to share their feedback,” Kloor noted. “We want to maximize revenue and have the products that people need, but we also want to make sure that we have approachable pricing and are best serving the people who are our customers.”

COMMENTS:

I just finished reading the article about Hydra Health and have to say I found it rather offensive. The article made several derogatory and quite frankly incorrect remarks about Hospital Gift Shops. I felt compelled to respond. At my hospital, the Gift Shops employ five full-time employees as well as a manager and assistant manager. We are all hospital employees. Our department falls under the division of support services, acknowledging the significant contribution we make to the staff, patients and visitors’ satisfaction. Not ‘insignificant”. My hospital is expanding with an additional 900,000 sf building and we are planning a beautiful new 1200 sf Gift Shop located in the center of the 1st floor lobby. Hardly an “afterthought”. Not sure where the author has visited a hospital Gift Shop but I have never been in one that didn’t carry “what people are actually looking for”. – Judi Stallings, UNM Hospital Gift Shop, Albuquerque, NM. 650 beds. 3/29/24

FROM CINDY

Judi, thank you for sharing your valuable perspective. We largely agree with your observations. While many hospital shops are thriving, some are struggling, and Hydra Health may be encountering these situations. However, it’s important to avoid generalizations as they can be misleading, as you pointed out. For example, this is far from the truth, “In typical gift shops, “you see a lot of things behind glass display cases, but what people are usually looking for is some deodorant or even a hairbrush…”

The article does offer several insights that managers may find useful, like Hydra Health’s retail model. It also highlights that companies such as HydraHealth, CloverKey (owned by Kelli’s), and Lori’s are poised to step in and manage shop operations, which can have both positive and negative consequences.  We strive to present balanced content, recognizing that each situation is unique.

We knew -and hoped!- it would spark a discussion. Thank you for starting this important conversation. – Cindy

How can shoplifting losses be reduced by AI?

In 2022, retail shrink surged 19% to $112 billion, with external theft making up 36% of losses, likely underreported.

Learn how artificial intelligence can help you monetize your video surveillance cameras and significantly reduce merchandise shrinkage.

Is shoplifting really surging?

The New York Times / Nov 29, 2023

Is the U.S. in the middle of a shoplifting wave? Target and other retail chains have warned of widespread theft. News outlets have amplified the story. On social media, people have posted videos of thieves looting stores.

But the increase in shoplifting appears to be limited to a few cities, rather than being truly national. In most of the country, retail theft has been lower this year than it was a few years ago, according to police data. There are some exceptions, particularly New York City, where shoplifting has spiked. But outside New York, shoplifting incidents in major cities have fallen 7% since 2019, before the Covid pandemic.

Why has the issue nonetheless received so much attention? Today’s newsletter tries to answer that question while taking a deeper look at recent shoplifting trends.

Shoplifting Trends: What You Need to Know

The most up-to-date source is the report, Shoplifting Trends: What You Need to Know, published by the Council on Criminal Justice. A few key takeaways from the report:

New York (64%) and Los Angeles (61%) had the largest increases in reported shoplifting among the study cities from mid-year 2019 to mid-year 2023. St. Petersburg (-78%) and St. Paul (-65%) had the largest decreases.

Comparing the most recent trends, from the first halves of 2022 and 2023, Los Angeles (109%) and Dallas (73%) experienced the largest increases among the study cities; San Francisco (-35%) and Seattle (-31%) saw the largest decreases.

The median value of goods stolen in shoplifting incidents grew from approximately $75 in 2019 to roughly $100 in 2021.

130 beds. 1/17/24

– Alison K.  2/27/24

Top 5 free tools for generating subject lines

Marketing email campaigns are the cornerstone of retail outreach. They show up in your inbox. All. Day. Long. So, what makes you open one and trash another. Meet the subject line. The most important element of any email. If it doesn’t drive the audience to open your email, then it’s a “dead send”. Your open-rate will be low and the email didn’t do it’s intended job. That’s why it’s vital to put in the time learn to write click-worthy subject lines.

Beyond the fundamental best practices – write for your audience, avoid spam words, limit one exclamation mark max, use active power words, be succinct and highly legible – there is a ton of information online to educate and guide you. Check out 8 Simple Rules for Writing Stellar Email Subject Lines or guides from Hubspot.

By the way, if you’re not sending marketing emails, subject line skills are helpful for writing shop signage, promos in hospital bulletins, social media posts, flyers and anything else that represents the gift shop. Everything you write for your shop is a form of marketing. Make it good and make it count!

We love using AI-powered subject line generators. They harness vast amounts of user data and sophisticated language-learning capabilities to help you spark interest and enhance your open rates. We use ChatGPT to help write subject lines for our sponsor’s email blasts, in which you are the recipient!

🎯 TIP: Create a folder “Email Blast Examples” and drop in incoming marketing emails with strong subject lines. Refer to the folder to help generate approaches, formatting, ideas, and tactics. Adapt them to your audience.

AI-powered subject line generators and testers have significantly advanced in recent years. They harness vast amounts of user data and sophisticated language-learning capabilities to help you spark interest and enhance your open rates. Just remember that AI is not perfect—yet. It’s still in its infancy and learning so to ‘speak human’. We use AI as an assistant, not the author.

Here are a few free AI tools you can use to generate subject lines you’ll actually want to use.

Chat GPT
Best for: generating free ideas

ChatGPT is only as good as the prompts you give it. It may require some extra prompts and manual edits to fit your email’s tone, but it’s a helpful tool to get ideas flowing. Learn how to use it to get useful results.

SubjectLine.com
Best for: refining a draft

SubjectLine.com grades your subject line and offers AI-generated improvements. Some suggestions were too long, but in general, we liked the tonal adjustments offered by the AI.

Refine
Best for: boosting open rates on marketing or promo emails

Refine uses an advanced algorithm to predict the potential open rate of your subject line based on your industry and list size. We could see this being super useful for A/B testing important promotions or transactional emails.

Subjectlinegenerator.com
Best for: generating good ideas, fast

This tool is excellent for getting many great subject lines quickly. It generates 10 catchy subject lines in no time, and they’re surprisingly good.

Omnisend Subject Line Tester
Best for: enhancing your copywriting skills

Omnisend grades your subject line and provides tips to enhance readability for both desktop and mobile screens. Aim for a grade of 90% or so to get the best results. We loved the unique coaching feature, making it our top pick.

Good luck and happy mailing!

GIFT MARKET EXPENSES

Q. What is the best way to justify the expense of attending a Gift Market? Is it possible to receive a stipend from a current vendor towards the cost of your trip? – Janis Farrington. Gottlieb Memorial Hospital Gift Shop/Trinity Health Systems. Melrose Park, IL

I ask permission of the Auxiliary, the monies saved by going to shows are well worth the price placed on the travel. – Tricia Rochman, Carbondale Memorial Hospital, Carbondale, IL. 154 beds. 1/24/24

We budget for it each year. We are not allowed to accept travel, money or gifts from vendors. – Lynn Harrison, 1/23/24

We enter it into our budget every year. Even when we put a hold on travel at our hospital our COO still approved the gift shop for travel. – Linda Armstrong. 1/23/24

We are auxiliary run so they finance the expenses. – M. Metry. 1/18/24

We budget for Atlanta Mart. – Nancy Williams. 1/17/24

We go to market in Dallas once a year, and order for the whole year. The expense is shared between our Auxiliary and our Hospital. We try to bring back some great cash and carry items and staff are always excited to see what is new, which causes sales to be high the week or two following market. I am looking for ideas on how we can see some cost absorption from some of our vendors, even though we may be too small of a shop to bargain for this. – Kristi King, Ozark Health. 1/17/24

We also use the discounts and specials at market to justify expenses of the trip. Orders that are placed there are for the next 6-9 months. – Rosemary, Phoenix Children’s Hospital. 1/17/24

We use the discounts and specials we receive when writing at the show to justify the expense. The savings usually more than pays for it. We were told we were not allowed to have vendors help pay for travel due to it being a conflict of interest. Sometime the Gift Shows themselves offer assistance. – Karla Glanzman, Seattle Childrens Hospital. 360 beds. 1/17/24

Strong January sales signal solid 2024

January retail sales nearly matched December’s busy holiday spending, according to the National Retail Federation.

Year-over-year growth was also solid, showing consumers are optimistic and utilizing their spending power, fueled by increasing employment rates and wages.

Core retail sales were down just slightly 0.04% month-over-month and up 3.24% year-over-year for January 2024. That compared with increases of 0.19% month-over-month and 2.4 year-over-year in December, according to the NRF’s Retail Monitor.

Retail Monitor is NRF’s new monthly metric for gauging retail sales. Unlike survey-based data, it uses actual purchase data from over 140 million credit and debit cards over nearly nine billion transactions.

January sales were up from last year in six retail categories (online sales, health/personal care stores, clothing/accessory stores) and up monthly in five categories, according to NRF.

Key retail categories up from 2023

  • Online stores ↑ 25.47%
  • Health/personal care stores ↑ 9.7%
  • Clothing/accessories stores ↑ 5.9%
  • Sporting/hobby/music/book stores ↑ 1.79%
  • General merchandise stores ↑ 1.14%
  • Furniture and home furnishings stores ↓ 6.35%
  • Electronic/appliance stores ↑ 4.21%
  • Grocery and beverage stores ↑ 4.06%

Our readers, hospital gift shop managers agree! Last month we asked our readers, “How were your sales this 2023 holiday season compared to 2022?” GiftBeat had reported that, despite media reports on how well retailers fared this holiday season, their data shows sales decreased 50%.

We’re happy to report that readers and members reported that sales were actually very good! Only a few reported low or breakeven sales. 👏🏼 Decreased sales? Not from this group of HGS retail masters! Source: Hospital Gift Shops Facebook Group

A sure way to generate impulse buys

Is your register increasing shops revenue? Add a few small pre-wrapped gifts to increase impulse buys.

It is the nature of consumers’ to shop impulsively. Under $20 impulse near your cashwrap is a great way to move overstock or upsell.

This may not work for every shop or product, but if any, it’s great for the holiday season.

How to make them really sell — leave one out for display and wrap the rest individually. Easy, grab-and-go buys! Customers will absolutely love a convenient pre-wrapped.

  • Candles, journals, candy, lip gloss or jewelry are ideal for both impulse buys and last-minute purchases.
  • Use low-cost wrapping like tissue paper and a simple ribbon. Keep it simple with neutral colors.
  • Leave one unwrapped and priced for display. Arrange the rest in an eye-catching countertop display.
  • Place near the cashwrap area where customers are already in purchasing mode.
  • There’s a fine line between an effective impulse area and a cluttered mess. Find that balance and don’t make your products compete for attention.

What makes a good impulse product? One that attracts the customer’s attention. If the customer is curious enough to pick it up, it’s almost as good as sold! Think about texture, color and purpose when choosing what items to feature in your impulse area.

Adequate stock is important, especially since impulse items are frequently small and you need to display them in a group.

🎯 For items that come in a display, remove a few to give the impression several have already sold.

Keep your stock in mind before deciding to pre-wrap gifts, too. It’s probably not worth the effort if you only have 3 or 4.

Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary donates $572,000

The Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary, a 100-member volunteer group that fundraises for Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, raised a record-breaking $572,000 in 2023. The donation is part of the Auxiliary’s total contribution of more than $2,457,000 in gifts over the last five years.

“I am grateful and proud that the ELIH Auxiliary continues to support Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital,” said Paul J. Connor, Chief Administrative Officer of SBELIH. “All the good they do is all for the hospital and our community.”

The ELIH Auxiliary raises funds to support SBELIH throughout the year with events such as the Dream Green Extravaganza, a Car/Cash Giveaway, Ladies Day on the Links, Italian Night Dinner, and more. The Auxiliary also operates the ELIH Auxiliary Opportunity Shop, a thrift shop located at 321 Main Street in Greenport Village, and the hospital’s gift shop. The Auxiliary has raised over $20 million since its inception in 1905.

Past donations have benefited the hospital through vital new equipment such as a new ventilator, med/surg bed upgrades, and replacement of furniture in staff and doctors’ lounges. Donations also support operational costs directly impacting the programs and services SBELIH offers patients.

“The ELIH Auxiliary is thrilled to continue to support Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital,” said Auxiliary President Helene V. Fall. “Our volunteers love giving back to the hospital, which is such an important part of the North Fork community.”

When inventory actually decreases margins

We’re always talking about the importance of moving inventory. Your stockroom door should go only one way, out. Excess stock is now cited as a ‘major concern’ for up to 47% of retailers, following the supply chain shortage.

What’s the big deal?

Studies show the annual cost of holding excess inventory is around 30%.

Top 5 sectors hit hardest
by post-holiday excess stock
1. Baby & toddler (100%)
2. Homewares (62%)
3. Luxury goods (55%)
4. Fashion & footwear (52%)
5. Sports, leisure, hobbies (50%)
Inventory Planner, 2023

It’s hard for retailers to survive right now, let alone be profitable. A previous track record of growth or high profits do not make merchants immune from the risks of failure and holding excess inventory.

British furniture brand MADE went public in 2021 with a valuation of £775 million. They were out of business in less than a year. The reason? Getting caught with massive inventory at just the wrong time.

Purchasing based on ‘instinct’ or inaccurate data will invariably lead to poor decision making, expensive overheads and poor cash flow.

Old inventory utilizes working capital to store that unnecessary stock.

  • The costs to acquire, travel, freight, unpack, price, display are not being recouped. They are sitting in the stockeroom.
  • Old inventory occupies shelf space needed for new inventory that actually sells.
  • Merchandise goes out of style, no longer trends, or demand stops (e.g., facemasks). If you’re overrun and tied up with unpopular inventory, you’re less able to respond to market shifts.
  • Tying up your budget in inventory means there’s less available for other line items like bills, salaries, or new products.

Successfully balancing inventory comes up a lot in our newsletter. It’s one of the most essential practices in retail. Yes, it’s that critical.

What can you do?

Take a deep dive into your data. Look at trends over the last twelve months and identify which products will be a struggle to shift. Then look at ways to move specific stock as quickly as possible.

PRODUCT BUNDLES

Combine fast-moving items with slow-moving ones in discounted bundles. Use the excess items as free gifts for medical staff customers or when customers spend a certain amount. Offer BOGO or even 3-for-1 bundles.

FLASH SALES …at prices that are too good to be true.

Flash sales are a tried-and-tested way to shift excess stock fast – and still bring in some (albeit limited) revenue. The first step is to identify all slow-moving items. Then decide on your discounting strategy. It can work well to take a staggered approach over a number of weeks (for instance, offering 25% in week one, 50% in week two, 75% in week three).

It should be clear how integral inventory is to cash flow. High inventory usually equates to lower gross margin.

JUST-IN-TIME INVENTORY

Implementing a Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory system can be another effective way to avoid inventory overstocks. A JIT inventory system is a lean approach in which you order inventory as it is needed. It requires careful planning, close monitoring, skilled buyers, a clear understanding of your shop’s needs and customer demand and, finally, a strong relationships with suppliers for a reliable delivery schedule. You’ll need to also adjust orders as needed. But, they can also increase the risk of stockouts. To mitigate this risk, establish clear communication channels with suppliers and monitor inventory levels closely.

BALANCE & SCHEDULING

Work with reliable fulfillment partners and brands to time your inventory correctly, avoiding both delays or surplus. Follow time-based planning with built-in buffers for supply chain issues.

FRESH MARKETING

For you online ecommerce stores, revamp your product descriptions or add in some extra personalized content. Especially in categories like fashion and homeware where purchases are more emotive.

INVENTORY AUDITS

Regular inventory audits help identify discrepancies between physical inventory levels and recorded inventory. This can identify potential issues, such as overstocks, understocks, or inventory shrinkage due to theft or other factors. Get the guide How to Conduct a Physical Inventory

Q. Where is everyone getting their candles these days? We have been carrying Village Candles for several years. They sell okay but I am wondering what other companies you may sell. Freight is just so high on candles and I am considering changing but wanted input from others. We are a 199 bed community hospital in rural North Carolina. • We just brought Woodwick back this fall. They used to be huge sellers for us years ago, before Yankee Candle bought them and nearly destroyed the brand. They were selling to discounters, etc., but my rep is telling me they are pulling back from that and now focusing on the gift shop market again. Enesco is representing them. So, I took a chance. Hope I don’t regret it! We also do well with Swan Creek, Candle Cottage Duo candles. We have very price-conscious customers who will buy online in a heartbeat, so we have to keep our selection fresh and new to keep their interest. – Melinda S

Why and how to a hire store designer

You’ve finally convinced your admins that the shop is ready for a redesign. Or maybe your shop’s location is moving. Where do you begin and what do you need to know. You have to consider innumerable things like your window display, store layout, signage, and visual merchandising. If given the budget, suggest bringing in a professional to create a design that is guaranteed to optimize sales.

What is a store designer?

A retail store designer creates and improves the image of a store. Some store designers may work on the structural design of a retail store or building, but interior store design is what we’re focusing on in this article. This involves designing the store layout, color scheme, window displays, visual merchandising, and more.

Why hire a store designer?

Save Money | Think of all the costly mistakes you might make if the design doesn’t drive sales. You can’t take that wall down or just move the cash counter. An experienced store designer can help avoid expensive errors in judgment.

Budgeting and Planning | A store designer can help create a budget, research products and prices, comply with regulatory matters, and create timelines.

Vendor Network | Store designers have solid relationships with select vendors and can obtain discounts and access resources that might not otherwise be available.

Coherence | Store designers have a trained eye and are excellent visual storytellers. They’ll pay close attention to how all the minor details come together. They create the complete customer experience.

How to find a (good) store designer

Ask acquaintances in the industry, ask other retailers who designed their store and the cost, network online (e.g., the Hospital Gift Shops Facebook Group), search online for “retail store designers”, checkout interior design communities like American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), Houzz, or network at market and gift shows.

What does a store designer do?
A retail store designer is responsible for creating and designing store layouts, displays, and other visual elements within a retail space. They ensure that the store is visually appealing, organized, and functional for customers. Store designers also create branding elements and signage, and may even be involved in creating store promotions.

What are the key elements in the design of stores?
A retail store design should inspire customers to purchase products, provide an enjoyable shopping experience, and encourage customers to return. Consider these elements in your store design:

  • Store layout and traffic flow
  • Product displays
  • Visual merchandising
  • Lighting design
  • Color and texture
  • Branding and style
  • Checkout placement

How do you design a store interior?

Designing for an optimized, revenue-driven retail experience creates a customer-focused shopping experience through the strategic use of physical space, visual merchandising, product display, and other elements. This includes creating an inviting atmosphere, optimizing the store layout, creating engaging visuals, and providing a seamless customer journey.

A few creative ideas to increase sales

We grabbed a few of the better ideas found in a recent article on increasing sales from Smart Retailer. Click below to read the full article. Here are the Cliff Notes:

SOCIAL MEDIA

Expanded social media presence by going live regularly with a What’s New Wednesday that features new arrivals in store.

Friday Reads segment focuses on great books to check out over the summer for traveling, etc.

When writing posts, be your authentic selves and just create community and find people.

Share the stories behind the products, giving personal stories or testimonials about the products, messaging or sentiments on the selection that is meaningful,

Engage and build the relationships with customers through social media so they trust and like shopping with you.

It’s easy to get discouraged when you don’t see immediate results on growing an audience, but just keep showing up. Consistency is key.

BUYING

Keep an eye on current television shows for what’s being shown to help guide buying decisions

Check out sites on Facebook, such as Better Homes & Gardens, to get an idea of what colors, patterns, and decorating styles designers are choosing.

Consider purchasing certain items from Amazon as the prices might be comparable to wholesale costs. This approach is advantageous if space and capital constraints prevent buying in quantities that would lower per-item costs enough to compete with Amazon.

Salary data for Gift Shop Manager

How did your salary stack up in 2023? We examined salary data from a few of the reputable job data websites to see how the numbers are trending this year. Here are the results from Payscale.com, Salary.com and Glassdoor.com

A few things to consider about job and salary websites like these. The data is aggregated from job postings across all types of retail shops. In fact, the majority are not in hospitals and, therefore, not NPOs. These salaries are typically higher, although we would argue that they should not be.

Additionly, although they are filtered for “manager” level salaries, these results have not been adjusted for location, years of experience, education or industry.

Readers can find several articles on salary in past issues of the newsletter by searching “salary” in the Newsletter Archive.

UPMC revitalize gift shops for the future

Cute clothes, easy checkouts, and local wares will be the markers of the gift shops for our time, regardless of whether you work in the hospital or simply live in the neighborhood.

Health systems know that hospital gift shops conjure up images of sad stuffed bears and limp feel-better balloons.

That’s why systems like Wellstar Health System in Georgia and Pennsylvania’s University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) are building new spaces for their gift shops—and they’re particularly focused on selling curated offerings and incorporating new technology.

The new spaces aren’t just for the patients and their visitors, either. Hospitals want to serve their customers, who are mostly their employees, as well as their larger surrounding communities.

“Hospital gift shops really are boutiques,” Amy Saye, director of volunteers and patient advocates at Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center, told Healthcare Brew. “I always call it the best-kept secret in your community because it [has] things you can’t find anywhere else. It’s a great small business.”

With medical professionals working long shifts, the need for an all-purpose gift shop is key. These workers often can’t leave to grab lunch or dinner, and even if they get the chance to step out, most retail and grocery stores are closed; shopping during a shift is a Herculean task.

At Wellstar, which has 10 hospitals throughout Georgia, 70% of the gift shop customers are staff, and the other 30% consists of patients and their visitors. The offerings, then, need to serve those target markets.

Kennestone Regional’s two gift shops—a 920-square-foot general gift shop and a 1,680-square-foot women’s shop—offer sundries like candy and snacks, beverages, flowers, and stuffed animals. The stores also offer seasonal items, along with clothes, shoes, and jewelry often found in boutiques. The women’s shop, which uses Airome products (also sold in the store) to add a mild fragrance to the space, sells new baby gifts as well.

Congratulations to Lynne Halliday and her team at The Women’s Shoppe at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. Lynne has been the Gift Shop Manager for over 17 years.

Their gift shop is beautifully decorated with ceiling decor that rotates with the seasons and eye-pleasing displays in coordinating colors!

She is a valued reader and contributor to this newsletter and the hospital gift shop Facebook group.

“You have to know who your customers are, what they’re looking for—you have to know what’s current,” Saye said, citing Atlanta Apparel, a wholesaler of trendy clothes, shoes, and accessories. “They actually love working with hospital gift shops because we pay our bills.”

Wellstar’s shop is expanding its physical footprint to 1,670 square feet because, Saye said, the gift shop of the future should be “a place for convenience” that can accommodate the growing need for these items—and a way to create a stronger connection with its visitors. “Our women’s services are offered in that same area,” Saye said. “We actually give people who come in for a mammogram a coupon for 25% off an item so that when they come in, [we say]: ‘

“Get your mammogram. We are so thankful you came in and you took care of your health,—go grab a cute item you can’t find anywhere else and get 25% off.”

Coupon offered at Wellstar’s Women’s Center.

That’s a tactic UPMC is taking with its gift shop, which is part of a new lifestyle village located in the middle of the Pittsburgh Innovation District. The shop is set to open in 2026.

The “pop-up retail” strategy allows UPMC to partner with local coffee shops, food and retail vendors, and artists. So that means these brands and businesses get to enter an expensive real estate market and set up shop, said John Krolicki, VP of facilities and support services at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The model not only creates opportunities for small businesses but also makes a hospital facility more desirable for the greater community to visit. “We’re really looking to support local businesses,” he said, adding they’re especially keen to work with minority-owned businesses that have been affected by gentrification.

Krolicki said that there are different business models for the companies to set up shop, but didn’t elaborate on the specifics, such as whether the hospital is setting up equity deals with the brands. “We’re not doing it to make money. We’re very flexible in how we arrange the deals, but we do want to break even,” he said. “This is more about bringing people from different areas in to sell to the people working in the Innovation District or in the hospital.”

The hospital also intends to integrate scalable technology into its gift shop—think smart scales and cashierless checkout stations—and then introduce the tech across UPMC’s 40 hospitals. “The tech that we’re looking at […] the scanner reads it and knows what you have on your tray. It automatically knows you have a drink, it knows you chose whatever items, it can scan it and charge you for your meal,” Krolicki said. “Gift shops are a necessity, and we’re totally changing them.”

Help! I need to move merchandise fast!

The holiday season is quickly coming to an end. Hopefully you’ve already hosted several events, starting in October, to move your holiday merchandise. Here are some great ideas for fast sales – before and after the holidays – shared by members of the Hospital Gift Shops Facebook Group.

🎯 TIP: Want to use some of these for next year? Cut and paste from here into an email addressed to yourself. Schedule the “send date” for September 2024. Hit send. It will show up in your inbox, next September, just when you’re planning holiday events. You can do this for any to-do or reminder you need down the road. We use it all the time for all types of situations.

National Ring-a-Ding Ding Day (fan favorite!). We played a game of “Find the Bell”. Volunteers hid a Christmas bell and customers were invited to find it. The customers who found the bell were awarded a $25 Gift Certificate. We had so many people looking for that bell, it was kinda funny, yet rewarding. We only gave away six gift certificates, but had a $3,000 day on a Tuesday, which is unheard of on our tiny shop. – Teri

When we re open on Dec 26 and all Christmas will be 50% off. – Nancy W.

We’re doing a drawing next week. For each $10 spent, they get one “entry” to win a gift basket valued at $60. It’s a great way to use up extra merchandise that didn’t sell, and it can be written off as a donation. – Aimee S.

During COVID, I took pictures of items and made a PowerPoint of everything for sale and shared it with staff. They did phone orders and we scheduled pick up time. I hope this helps! – Julie A.

We do 25% off whatever fits in a bag starting Wednesday afternoon. Then move into a progressive sale starting next week. Ending with 50% off after Christmas! Need to sell it to buy more next year! – Jen M.

I feel like we lose money if we go 50% off right away. I’m going to try dollar reduction instead of %. Example: $2 off a purchase of $10, $3 off $15, $4 off $20.

Colors of Christmas sale. Each day features a different color and a % off items that feature that color. The color is announced each morning on our Facebook page and the local radio. We do not give the colors out ahead of time. The sale lasts for 12 days. Leave red and green for the last two days of the sale. – Kristen H.

We’re also doing something similar. One day all snowmen, one day all gnomes, etc. The announcement goes out by email to staff each morning. – Ann B.

I sold over $5,000 in 8 hours. We had great success doing separate Pop-Up Shops at two of our locations that don’t have a gift shop. We had amazing sales! I pretty much take whatever I can fit in my car and set up on folding tables for four hours. We take credit card, using a Clover Go and the Clover Go phone app, or payroll deduction via QuickCharge POS with payroll deduction. It is available online so I just take my laptop. All of the funds are automatically credited to my shops account. It also boosts morale at those campuses.

A special thanks to all those who shared their terrific ideas!

Top takeaways from a recent article on what retail trends to expect in 2024.

Hybrid Shopping

Emphasis on the hybrid purchasing experience. Concentrate on developing an omnichannel retail experiences. The brick-and-mortar experience, the ‘shoppable’ Facebook post, and the promo email directing you to an online store all stem from the same shop.

Frictionless Delivery

Quick checkout. Expedited delivery. Speed and convenience are king.

Augmented Reality

Think AR-enabled smart mirrors that display your preferred attire. Modify a dress color with a single swipe. Check-out kiosks with auto-scanning for the drop-pay-go experience.

Social Media Commerce

Push out inspiring information – at the right moment – to generate massive sales via social media by focusing on what is culturally relevant to target customers.

A hybrid shopping experience is influencing the future of retail as companies adapt to a new normal. Here, we look at what retail trends to expect in 2024.

Right about now everyone is exhausted, overwhelmed and burned out.

Right about now you can’t feel your feet.

Right about now you’ve had far too much cheese.

Right about now you really need a laugh.

You’re welcome.

Doritos debuts nacho cheese alcohol

For a mere $65, consumers can get their hands on a delicious mix of nacho cheese and alcoholic spirits thanks to Doritos and Empirical. The companies have collaborated to create a limited-release bottled spirit that tastes just like Doritos’ famous nacho cheese chips. The flavoring was created by using real Doritos chips and “retaining their essence” through vacuum distillation. The bottles will be available at select retailers in California and New York, as well as online, starting next month.

Q. Where is everyone getting their candles these days? We have been carrying Village Candles for several years. They sell okay but I am wondering what other companies you may sell. Freight is just so high on candles and I am considering changing but wanted input from others. We are a 199 bed community hospital in rural North Carolina. There are few shopping options in our town other than Walmart. – Angela Q. 10/16/23

  • We sell Tyler Candles and the Tyler wash. It was a big investment but has been sooo with it!! – Jenni D
  • Here are a handful of candle brands that we either currently carry or have in the past. Some of these are on the higher price range of the category, but are well known and sell themselves. Capri Blue, Voluspa, Broken Top Co, Illume, Candelfy, Mixture, Archipelago, Paddywax, LAFCO. Hope this helps! – Jordan A
  • Swan Creek has always been our favorite! – Lori H
  • The Women’s Shoppe at Kennestone Hospital in Matietta sells the Bridgewater brand of candles and the fragrance Sweet Grace has been a big seller for us for the past several years. We also sell Votivo brand and the fragrances Red Current and Icy Blue Pine are big sellers in the Fall and Winter as well. Hope this helps. – Lynne H

– Melinda S

Q. When is everyone setting out Christmas? 🎄

A member of the Hospital Gift Shop Facebook group recently asked when everyone is setting up and displaying Christmas merchandise. We analyzed the 36 comments to identify patterns and draw conclusions based on the content. Here’s what we found:

🎯 Maximize sales window
Displaying Christmas the day
after Thanksgiving
= four weeks of sales.

Early October = eight weeks of
sales at standard price.
  • The average date was October 24. We recommend earlier to maximize your sales window.
  • Dates are often associated with specific events, such as open houses, (e.g. “Holly Daze”) to create excitement and mark the beginning of the holiday season.
  • Some shops put out new stock every week, keeping the selection fresh and encouraging employees and customers to return regularly.
  • Incremental reveals create a sense of anticipation and exploration.
RESPONSES
We started putting Christmas out today! Lots of work and fun. This is just the beginning of things to come. We hold off putting all items out so that we can put new stock out every week approximately 10 – 15 different items out weekly. I have found this keeps the employees coming back to see what’s new. – Debbie C
Get it out now! – Cindy Jones
We’ll be starting the last week of October! – Jordan A
November 5 – Jenny L
Third to fourth week of October – Lori V

We started on Saturday (Oct 14) with inspiration but today we put out our kitchen section. It is flying off the shelves. This is the earliest we’ve ever put out Christmas but other local gift shops already have it out. Partially because I am going out of town the usual time we put it out (after Halloween). Gift Shop employees are happy getting it out early. It’s less stressful. – Jen M

This is no ordinary gift shop

A cancer center gift shop designed for both retail and wellness

Hydra Health Gift Shop at the Henry Cancer Center is no ordinary gift shop – but it wasn’t meant to be.

The shop’s designers, architect firm Figure, aimed to realize a space that navigates away from the sterile feeling of many hospital interiors, both materially and figuratively. They began by visiting a number of hospital gift shops as research and the experience left them “feeling incredibly overwhelmed by all the stuff crammed in these compact spaces,” not to mention the often hectic environments of hospitals.

The shop serves as a combined wellness, utility and retail space with a work nook, beauty bar and respite room. The material continuity keeping the space from feeling overcrowded, apropos for a cancer center.

The shop’s designers said that the team wanted to create “opportunities for rest and contemplation in a soothing environment.” Covering 1,600 square feet, Hydra Health’s new facilities manage to fill a range of needs without feeling packed in. The shop stocks refreshments, personal care items, clothing and specialty cancer care needs.

Lori’s Gifts sued by EEOC for disability discrimination

U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission / Sep 2023

Lori’s Gifts, Inc., a nationwide chain of hospital gift shops with a location at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio, violated federal law by making unlawful disability-related inquiries and discriminating against persons with disabilities in its application and hiring processes, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it announced today.

According to EEOC’s lawsuit, Lori’s Gifts subjected applicants to discriminatory qualification standards and asked unlawful pre-employment inquiries, including whether applicants can walk or stand for up to five hours and if applicants can lift up to 30 pounds. Applicants who answer “No” to either question are deemed not to be qualified for employment and are rejected.

Such alleged conduct violates the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA), which prohibits disability discrimination, retaliation and interference with rights secured by the ADA. The EEOC filed suit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio (EEOC v. Lori’s Gifts, Inc., Case No. 2:23-cv-03175-CMV), after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its administrative conciliation process.

“Employers that engage in discriminatory hiring practices must be held accountable,” said Philadelphia District Office Regional Attorney Debra Lawrence. “The EEOC is committed to enforcing the rights and protections secured by the ADA.”

For more information on disability discrimination, please visit https://www.eeoc.gov/disability-discrimination.

Hospital gift shop reopens under new management

The gift shop at University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital recently transitioned its operations to Cloverkey, a hospital gift shop outsource partner and subsidiary of Kelli’s Gift Shop Suppliers, based in Carrollton, TX.

The transition is in partnership with the Friends of Strong, the Strong Memorial Hospital’s volunteer organization. The shop closed on September 6 and held its grand reopening on October 2, 2023.

“Through our partnership with Cloverkey, we look forward to increasing our financial support of these critical programs while expanding gift shop services,” said Sandy Arbasak, Director of the Friends of Strong. “It’s a win-win,” she continued.

Cloverkey announced that the gift shop will have a fresh new look, but familiar faces will remain as almost the entire gift shop staff will continue working in the shop. Other changes include:

  • Expanded operating hours – almost doubling the shop’s original hours
  • New ecommerce site with patient rooms delivery
  • Customer loyalty program
  • Merchandise enhancements, including hospital-branded logo merchandise.
Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital Gift Shop / Cloverkey

Kim Schuler, Chief Revenue Officer of Cloverkey, laid out the company’s vision for the new shop, saying, “We know we serve at the hospital’s invitation and that everything we do reflects on the hospital. The new gift shop will honor the Friends of Strong standard. It will be an expansion and extension of the work FOS has done in its long tenure of service to the hospital.”

California approves $25/hour healthcare minimum wage

Workers at a hospital with a high governmental payer mix, an independent hospital with an elevated governmental payer mix, a rural independent covered healthcare facility, or a covered healthcare facility that is owned, affiliated or operated by a county with a population of less than 250,000 as of Jan. 12 would earn $18 per hour starting next year, with pay increasing to $25 an hour in 2033.

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 525 into law on October 13, 2023, establishing a $25 hourly minimum wage for workers in hospitals and other medical settings.

Employees at healthcare facilities with 10,000 or more full-time equivalent workers will receive $23 per hour starting in 2024, with an increase to $25 per hour by 2026. This applies to roles such as nursing assistants, medical coders, launderers, and hospital gift shop workers.

For workers at specific hospitals, including those with a high governmental payer mix or those affiliated with counties with a population below 250,000, the minimum wage will start at $18 per hour in the following year, eventually reaching $25 per hour by 2033.

The bill provides an option for healthcare facilities facing financial distress to request a temporary pause or an alternative phased-in approach to the minimum wage requirements, contingent upon providing appropriate documentation.

4 tips for successful cross merchandising

Cross-merchandising is a tried and tested retail management strategy that helps increase sales using tools you already have at your disposal — your products.

What is cross merchandising?

“Cross-merchandising,” also known as secondary product strategy, involves displaying complementary products from diverse categories together to encourage multi-item purchases. This approach enhances the shopping experience, prompts customers to remember additional item needs, and inspires impulse buys.

Cross-merchandising displays brings together cross-category thematically related elements. Themes such as an activity, event, holiday, household room, lifestyle occasion.

Examples of cross merchandising

Camping cross merchandising display with goods that shoppers might otherwise forget to pack. Topo Designs Store – Ft. Collins, CO

In retail, complete outfits are built out on mannequins, using clothing, shoes and accessories, to highlight multiple products that form a ‘look’. In grocery stores, baking pans might be strategically placed next to cake mixes. This prompts the customer to make complementary purchases they didn’t know they needed. IKEA is the master of cross-merchandising skillfully staging entire rooms to demonstrate how each item complements the other.

Benefits of cross merchandising

  • Encourage impulse purchases
  • Make purchase decisions easier for the customer
  • Increase overall sales
  • Advertise new products
  • Aids in inventory management
  • Move products with slow turnover rates
  • Aids customer from forgetting items
  • Inspiration ideas for new purchases

Use customer and inventory data

Arrange products using common sense, but also leverage the data available from your POS and retail management software to uncover shopping patterns. For instance, if you see that women frequently buy two products from different categories, design a cross-merchandising display featuring both.

Highlight new products

Arrange new products alongside consistently popular items. But, make sure they are somehow relevant to the displays theme.

Move slow products

Place slow-moving products next to core products that move well. Again, make sure they are somehow relevant. For example, that new gourmet mustard isn’t moving. Create a display with ingredients to create the perfect hot dog or tailgate party.

How to justify payroll deduction to admins?

Following a subscriber submitted question, we’ve been discussing payroll deduction, it’s value, and the impact of having it discontinued. You can read more in the August issue.

There was some great feedback, including a follow-up question, “We know we are losing money not having payroll deduction and I see a lot of percentages stated in articles. Are there data or studies that justifies payroll deduction that we can use or cite to approach admin?” Check out the response, including previous member polls, survey results, and cited resources.

We also polled our readers to provide more evidence-based data to justify the value of payroll deduction. Here are the results!

On average, what percentage of your total revenue is derived from payroll deductions for both online and in-store purchases combined?
If exact data is not available, please provide your best estimate based on available records or knowledge. Do not include COVID era. Revenue sources include all physical store locations, online, in-store, special events, kiosks, etc.

Pembroke Hospital auxiliary hosts fundraiser fashion show

Sep 28, 2023

Pembroke Regional Hospital will host their annual fashion show, organized by the hospital’s auxiliary. Brenda Long, is the Manager of the Sunshine Gift Shop at Pembroke Regional Hospital.

The fashion show will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Attendees will be treated to desserts, tea, and coffee upon arrival, with entertainment provided by volunteer Peter Boxer. Tickets are available at the gift shop or at the door for $20, and reservations can be made by calling the hospital’s gift shop.

The auxiliary’s contributions extend beyond the fashion show. Since 2010, they have donated $2.8 million to the hospital, funded television purchases, and supported various hospital needs.

The auxiliary, consisting of 57 volunteers, is dedicated to aiding the community and has adapted to challenges, such as providing free televisions during COVID-19 restrictions.

This shop rotates their best selling brands in and out, in a dedicated space, using vendor-sourced signs. SEPTEMBER 15, 2023

Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, UK

Welcome to the Golden Quarter

What is the Golden Quarter?

The ‘Golden Quarter’ spans from October to December, a time when large increases in customers and revenue can occur due to known sales periods such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the Christmas period.

This is the time of year when retailers can expect to generate between 50-70% of their annual revenue. Making the Golden Quarter work for you requires careful planning that, in reality, should have begun back in January.

“I don’t have a plan…but I wish I did”

You attend a trade show, all the new inventory comes in and then you work like mad to unpack and display it beautifully. You might get caught up with everything required on a daily basis to run your shop; juggling inventory, staffing, buying, and more. Then, you start to frantically move merchandise and displays around the shop in an effort to get people in through the door and increase sales. Often, it is too little too late. The holiday has come and gone and you just weren’t prepared.

The well is dry and there just aren’t enough customers for all that merchandise.

There is only one way to make sure that you have a steady consistent stream of ‘raving fans’! That is to have a steady and consistent stream of marketing events and special sale events. Make all the pieces of your marketing plan work like a well-oiled machine. You need a marketing plan that doesn’t need your attention all the time. With a good marketing calendar, you never have to worry about what needs doing next because it’s clearly spelled out on your daily calendar.

Selling Christmas: Tips to drive Q4 sales

Gift Shop Plus / Summer 2023

We thought the following tips were spot on for hospital gift shops:

“We started mapping out our promotional schedule in September with an angle and a strategy behind all the marketing to be more customer- and experience-focused rather than just a sales and product pitch.”

Grab Bag Sale. “We offered three different sized bags at $20, $25 and $30. Customers could fill them with anything in the designated area. Customers loved the great deals and anticipation: we loved moving older products physically out of our space and generating cash flow from products that have been around too long!”

Mark your calendars — permanently. Loyal customers love annual affairs. “Our two biggest events of the year are our Holiday Open House, the first Saturday in November, and Small Business Saturday (SBS), the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The open house kicks off the holiday season and creates excitement and buzz. Décor and holiday cards are (typically) top sellers. On SBS, our community really rallies around our local businesses and people begin purchasing all their giftables.”

“We did a Ghoul Gang Launch Party in our Little Rock store in time for the ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ movie. In the city stores, we made sure to be fully stocked with Halloween cards and decorations in a bigger way. We sold out to the piece.”

“We set up a typewriter and ‘mailbox’ for children to type and mail a letter to Santa inside the shop.”

“We love to host other small businesses to generate foot traffic. We invited famous hand-cut silhouette artist, Karl Johnson, to create beautiful children’s silhouettes right in the store. A local macaron-maker, Girl Loves Cake Desserts, also hosts Thanksgiving and Christmas popups.”

The Gift Shop: A patient with cancer’s vacation spot

I became a frequent shopper at the hospital gift shop throughout my cancer experience.

CURE Mag / Aug 23, 2023

After enduring some ungodly cancer surgery, such as a mastectomy or brain surgery or even just a lumpectomy, and you’ve lain in bed for a couple of days and grown tired of looking at four walls, your roommate, or the squawking television with the sound coming through the little handheld control device on your bed, you’ve just got to get up and go somewhere. But where? Tahiti? Mackinaw Island? Bermuda? No. All of these places are impossible to get to in your condition. Shoot! You just had a cancer operation, man. You’ve got tubes in you and are connected to devices that are displaying your vital signs.

There’s only one place to go to other than to the toilet or to walk the hall. The gift shop!

The hospital gift shop is a cancer patient’s paradise. Going there is like going on a brief vacation. Let’s examine some of the delights of this marvelous place:

Candy – If you’re allowed to eat it, this is the place to get it. Let’s face it, hospital food can be bland. There’s nothing better than biting into a Butterfinger candy bar while standing in your treaded slipper socks on the linoleum floor, clad in your hospital gown. Of course, before you left your room, you had a nurse make sure you were tied in back so that you wouldn’t embarrass yourself. Let yourself go! There’s also chewing gum and Coke and potato chips and Fritos. You might as well be in the islands somewhere; it’s such a happy place. The only thing that’s missing is a martini or a good beer.

Reading material – Best sellers, magazines, newspapers. Hurrah. It’s good to look at the headlines and see what’s going on in the world since you’ve been inside. But just a glance; you’ll get the idea of the misery on the outside before you know it. The hospital has much better vibes than reality, believe it or not. At least hospitals are concerned with maintaining life and ridding the world of illness.

Trinkets – Jewelry, little ceramic boxes, gifts of all kinds to give to a loved one, even yourself. If you examine the heart necklace closely enough, you’ll discover that you want to buy it as a souvenir of a tumor they just removed.

Flowers – Behind the counter, there are beautiful roses for visitors who didn’t have the time or the wherewithal to purchase the blooms on the outside. Maybe you’ll buy yourself a bouquet. Why not?

Clothing – Just as in vacation resort gift shops, there’s clothing – bed jackets, robes, packages of underpants – for those in need. But this doesn’t apply to you. You packed two suitcases for a short stay at the hospital.

Toiletries – Need something that the hospital doesn’t supply such as designer perfume? It’s here. Spray several kinds on your wrists and arms. You now smell interesting rather than dirty.

Nonpatients – Perhaps, one of the best things about the gift shop is that it’s populated by citizens of the healthy world. They’re wearing street clothes and their minds are a million miles away from sickness and stitches and drainage and pain! They’re smiling, and they put you in a grand mood. You, the cancer patient, standing in slipper socks and a hospital gown.

Oh, it’s great to go shopping with the healthy folks who have come to the gift shop not for a brief vacation like you, but for a pack of gum or a greeting card for their loved one.

Yes, while in the hospital, the gift shop is my favorite destination to escape. And I don’t even have to take a plane to get there.

Remember your impact you have and the value you bring.

Dubai Hospital Gift Shop

Curious to know what a hospital gift shop looks like in Dubai, the land of luxury. This is Ohou Gifts in Mediclinic City Hospital, Dubai, UAE. It’s fancy and definitely different!

Q. How did you justify payroll deduction to admins?

A shop manager sent us a question regarding the discontinuation of employee payroll deduction. It stated, “Earlier this year our health system discontinued the option of payroll deduction. This has significantly impacted our sales. Have others experienced this and how have they rebounded?” Several of you provided solutions or further validation for payroll deduction that you can read in the August issue

Here is a great follow-up question:

Q. We know we are losing money not having payroll deduction and I see a lot of percentages stated in articles. Is there data or studies that justifies payroll deduction that we can use or cite to approach admin?– Barb Moyer 8/30/23

FROM CINDY

Hi Barb, my professional observations, made from over 35 years of consulting with over 100 hospital gift shops and decades of feedback in this newsletter, regarding payroll deduction are:

Figure 1. Cindy Jones Assoc. Sep 15, 2021

First, the majority of shops have employee payroll deduction in place. Secondly, employee payroll deduction has, on average, accounted for 40-50% of shop sales. It’s easy for us shop managers to understand why, but the need for supporting data and resources is understandable.

Over the years, I have witnessed many shops struggle to get employee payroll deduction approved, yet they usually prevailed.

Majority have payroll deduction

The results of our 2021 payroll deduction survey showed that 76% of shops reported having payroll deduction (Figure 1.). We actually ran this survey to demonstrate how prevalent it is, ergo its value. A formal survey conducted in 2011 included the same question in which 75.3% reported having payroll deduction.

Successful shops are constantly thinking of ways to removing barriers to sale.  A simple badge swipe is easier for employees, especially those on break who need a quick transaction. Customer’s appreciate convenience and the demand for this convenience soared after COVID.

“Obtaining payroll deduction was not difficult. Our hospital uses payroll deduction for when an employee is a patient and to pay fees at our sports medicine center. This has increased our business almost 20%.” – Swinson J. Comment in Cindy’s Newsletter for Gift Shop Managers. (2016, Apr).

“Does your hospital do payroll deductions for charity donations (United Way), uniforms, prescriptions, or any other employee benefit? Utilize the software or system used for these. Payroll deduction is a way of life in a majority of hospitals I know about. – Lantz C. Comment in Cindy’s Newsletter for Gift Shop Managers. (2013, Dec 2).

Beautiful holiday displays

If there’s one person who outdoes Santa Claus in their holiday planning, it’s Sara Villari. Villari founded Occasionette in 2013 in South Philadelphia when she noticed the up-and-coming, walkable neighborhood lacked a gift and stationery store. Since its founding a decade ago, Occasionette has expanded to two additional locations: one in Collingswood, New Jersey — its flagship location — and another situated in Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood.

Occasionette carries a wide variety of gifts, including a tea towel line started by Villari herself, cookbooks, candles, puzzles, tableware and more. It offers hundreds of greeting cards, carrying lines such as E. Frances Paper, Rifle Paper Co. and Carolyn Suzuki Goods.

But the extensive product offering is not all Occasionette is known for. Each year, Villari goes all out in the holiday displays across each location.

SHOP SIZE

Q. What is the smallest square footage you have seen for a gift shop in a larger hospital (e.g., 645 beds)? We will be losing our existing space of ~700 sq ft (+ back office and storage) and are currently evaluating our (very limited) options. The new space will likely be a much smaller footprint (300-500 sq ft). – Wendi Vela, Shop Manager at UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA

FROM CINDY

Small hospitals contain fewer than 100 beds. Medium hospitals contain between 100-499 beds. In large hospitals, defined as +500 beds, gift shops are typically a minimum of 1,000 square feet of sales space. That equates to 2 sq ft/bed (sales space). Remember, this is a benchmark, not an absolute.

Sales space does not include stock rooms, fitting rooms, back office space, etc.

Target sales per square foot
In evaluating both successful and failing shops, I have found that a minimum of $400-$500 per square foot (at retail) in annual sales is doable for most shops. But, many shops around the country are generating well over $1,500 in sales per square foot per year.

NOTE: This benchmark applies to shops that are proportionate in size to their hospital (number of employees and beds). A small shop in a big hospital should generate higher sales per square foot. A disproportionately large shop in a small hospital will generate lower sales per square foot.

To maximize every square foot of a shop’s selling space:

– There should be very little storage (drawers or cupboards) in the selling space.
– Merchandise must turn fast.
– Maintain appropriate pricing structures for maximum profit margins.

Let’s see how other shop’s sized up in comparison.

We asked readers to provide their shop’s square feet (defined as “selling space”) and the number of beds. Here are the responses from shop managers:

While this is a small, informal poll that assumes data provided is accurate. There is clearly a large range, multiple variable, and we don’t have sales data for these shops. With hospital administration often dictating shop space, many find their square footage undersized. Older hospitals or inner-city hospitals may not have room to expand.

In Wendi’s case, her current sales space of 700 sq ft is already below the recommended benchmark of 2 sq ft/bed. We do hope this information is helpful and you’re able to retain larger space for your shop!

Is your shop large enough for the hospital size and to feasibly generate the desired or prescribed sales? If not, check out the template letter requesting additional gift shop space in last month’s issue. But remember, it is best to plan shop renovations for January or February when sales are slow.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Your input helps this community grow and succeed.

Information is based on the consultant’s general experience, knowledge of gift shop management, and data from sponsored national surveys.

CANDLE CITATION

Q. Today we were paid a visit by our Director of Environment of Care and Life Safety telling us the hospital was cited by the Fire Marshal for a doctor having an unlit candle in his office. We sell candles in our gift shops and now they are suggesting we no longer carry candles as they are considered “combustible”. Can you tell me if you have ever heard of this before? I have been here over 10 years and have carried candles for just about that amount of time. I have never heard of it. – Deborah R. Kerr, Director of Retail Strategy & Gift Shop Operations, Children’s Mercy, Kansas City, MO. 4/24/23

FROM CINDY
In my +30 years working with hospital gift shops, I have never heard of a case where selling candles violates National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code for healthcare facilities. Once a candle is sold it is not the responsibility of the gift shop to determine how or where it will be used. It is up to the hospital and the employee who purchased the candle to follow the policies. There are many more flammable and combustible compounds in a hospital that fall under this code.  Thank you for sharing!

SHOPPING BAGS

Q. I would be interested in hearing what other hospital gift shops do about shopping bag expense. We have been giving them away when the purchase is a gift, but this is getting out of hand and prices of bags have really gone up. I would like to start charging but, not sure how this will go over since we have been giving them away for so long. Even the plastic “thank you bags” have gone up in price. – Cheryl, Novant Health, Charlotte, NC. 3/22/23

At Pink-A-Dilly gift shop we have always charged for specialty gift bags. We carry 3-sizes and prices are $1.75, $2.25, and $2.75 which includes tissue paper and ribbon. We have done this for 21 years and people love it. They can choose their size and pattern which we keep all bags in view on a slatboard wall. I order them from Nashville Wraps. Bags given at purchase of merchandise, we do not charge for. We use pink plastic bags also purchased from Nashville wraps. Works great! – Debbie Swan, Pink-A- Dilly Gift Shop, Mountain Home, AR. 268 beds. 6/16/23

We charge for the specialty birthday, congratulations etc. bags but not our regular paper bags. We do have reusable bags with our logo that we recently got. Right now, we are doing a promotion to get customers into the habit of using them (and saving us money by not needing our paper bags). We hand out to our loyalty customers at purchase. Inside the bags are coupons for 10% and 15% off in the month of May, June and July. It has been very effective. In addition, it advertises for us too. – Jodi Babineau, Sunshine Gift Shoppe, Lakeview Medical Center, Rice Lake, WI. 40 beds. 4/18/23.

We do not charge and they remain pretty inexpensive for us through Nashville Wraps, but the key is ensuring that you receive free freight. I did switch to a plain plastic bag and I think that cost us .24 cents per bag. Most of our customers spend well over that so it’s okay. – Ali McCrary. Good Samaritan, Vincennes, IN. 232 beds. 4/22/23

Yes, we charge for gift bags. We have basic price points for the kraft paper bags and do have some premium glossy bags. We use Nashville Wraps. – Greg Holtgrewe. Baptist Health Paducah, Paducah, KY. 300 beds. 4/18/23

We do not charge, use some reusable plastic and also Kraft bags with handles. Both can be used as gift bags when we add colorful tissue and curly ribbon. Customers really appreciate this. We buy from American Retail. – Whidbey Health Medical Center, Coupeville. 35 beds. 4/19/23

We do not charge for gift bags and we purchase from Dollar Tree and Amazon. We are a small hospital gift shop. – Janet Sherwood.  4/19/23

We buy gift bags from Dollar Tree and order from Kellis gift shop supplier to have for customers to buy when purchasing a gift. – Karen, South Austin Medical Clinic, Austin, TX. 4/19/23

No charge. We use Nashville Wraps; the price is reasonable – Tricia Rochman, Carbondale Memorial Hospital, Carbondale, IL. 154 beds. 4/19/23

We do not charge for gift bags. We offer brown handle bags with colored tissue and ribbon as a courtesy to our guests. We do offer gift bags from the giftwrap company at retail for those who want a little more. – Kevin Shaw, Methodist Hospital Gift Shop, St. Louis Park, MN. 4/19/23

We do not charge for gift bags as we feel this is a courtesy for shopping with us. If they do not purchase a gift from the Gift Shop and they want a gift bag, we do charge a small fee. – Deb Kerr, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City. 385 beds. 4/19/23

We charge for gift bags and we have all different sizes and shapes. we carry pink merch bags that we do not charge for and get them through Nashville wrap. – Christine Parker, Kent Hospitality Shop, Warwick. 359 beds. 4/19/23

SOCIAL MEDIA

Q. When it comes to social media and you are restricted to nothing outside of the hospital, how do you make this work? We do have a Facebook page, but it is a closed group. As volunteers, we are part of this group and we do invite friends. But feel this doesn’t reach more in the community. – Jan Friedman, Unity Point, Dubuque, IA. 1/24/23

I would love to join a facebook group for gift shop managers!  We are a small hospital gift shop in Hays, Kansas.  I love seeing the ideas of other managers. – Nikki M. Director, Volunteer & Associate Services, HaysMed. 7/26/23

We use Facebook to promote events, fundraisers, merchandise and more. Facebook groups are also a great way to share, to remind people to come to your business! This is especially helpful when unable to visit the hospital gift shop during COVID with visitor/public restrictions. – Jennifer Bahlmann-Ballantine. 3/7/23

Does Cindy have any social media groups or message boards for gift shop managers and buyers to collaborate in a more effectively and allow for real time reactions? I know many gift shop personnel may participate in volunteer management professional networking groups and organizations but there doesn’t seem to be anything out there specific to gift shop retailers. Is anyone a part of any local groups for networking? -Holly Verbos, Penn State Health, Hershey, PA. 628 beds. 2/22/2023

I love this idea! I would love to have something to be able to connect with other hospital gift shop managers. It would be great to be able to ask questions, bounce ideas and just overall support from other managers :)  – Lanie Ray, Wishes Gift Shop/Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster, OH. 2/24/2023

Even a private Facebook group would be really helpful. We could post pictures of displays or products for each other to comment on and discuss. I think it would foster greater newsletter comment and discussion too! -Holly Verbos, Penn State Health, Hershey, PA. 628 beds. 2/24/2023

We have a closed Facebook group, as well. And need advice also. – Nancy Williams. 2/17/23

As a not-for-profit hospital, we are not allowed to post outside of the hospital. We are allowed to email our employees internally. – Craig McKneely, Scripps Mercy Hospital Gift Shop, San Diego. 412 beds. 2/17/23

We use our hospital’s communications and public relations office for that purpose. – Peter Waugh. 2/17/23

Our health system requires social media posts go through marketing. As ‘just’ the gift shop it is difficult to get regular postings. Pre-COVID we would have annual events throughout the year, usually four. Post-COVID we only have two, Poinsettia and Pastries for Christmas and The Planting Patch in May right before Mother’s Day. With annual events marketing creates a design/sign that they will post on social media. Each year we use the same design and change the date or times as needed. I feel gift shops are the cherry on top of the hospital and are usually an afterthought for marketing. Non-retail people don’t fully understand the value of real-time information. – Noelle Boardman,  St. Luke’s Floral & Gifts, Cedar Rapids, IA. 530 beds. 2/17/23

Yes. I’ve always been told that there are restrictions and that you have to be careful posting pricing if you’re a non-profit, so we have an open gift shop page and post pictures of new product and fundraisers. Would love to see an article on the do’s and don’ts of non-profit social media pages!! – Ali McCrary. 2/17/23

Our hospital requires all social media posts to go through marketing for the entire health system. Gift shops are never part of the information that is shared with the community. We haven’t found a solution. – Amy Saye 2/17/23

It’s great to see so much interest in this question! Let’s address some of the comments.

SOCIAL MEDIA & NON-PROFITS

Hospital gift shops are permitted to use social media and to advertise, but they must be related to the hospital’s exempt purpose of promoting the health of its patients. They need to:

  1. Explicitly state that proceeds go toward supporting the hospital. “All of the proceeds from the gift shop directly benefit patient care at Ascension Via Christi Manhattan and the Mercy Auxiliary.”
  2. Be directed toward patients, medical staff, employees, or visitors
  3. Comply with HIPAA laws (e.g., no patient info or images)
  4. Typically follow branding guidelines set by the hospital or health system to ensure consistency and coherence in their messaging and visual identity.
  5. Follow advertising regulations set by the FTC or other regulatory bodies. For example, gift shops may need to disclose if they are sponsoring a post or using paid advertising.

There are several hospital gift shops with terrific Facebook Pages:

From: Top 6 hospital gift shop Facebook pages

It is counter intuitive to restrict a gift shop from using social media. The shop’s goal is the raise funds for the hospital, after all. Limiting its reach and online footprint is, in turn, limiting the funds raised. Ironically, it can only hurt the hospital funding goals, in the end. Social media is arguably the most powerful tool a nonprofit has at their disposal. It’s free and a simple way to “push” great products in front of hospital employees and customer’s via their feeds. See last month’s article, “Proof that social media can increase sales“.

Along the same lines, it is also a myth that 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations cannot make a profit. Most hospitals and their subsequent gift shops are for profit. They charge sales tax and operate as a business. The shops then donate all their profits to the hospital for patient benefit and equipment. Credit Card Competition Act could lower swipe fees

The Senate plans to vote on the Credit Card Competition Act. The bill is aimed at credit card swipe fees, which average 2.24% of the transaction but can range as high as 4%.

Swipe fees have more than doubled over the past decade and rose $22 billion last year to a record $160.7 billion when debit cards are included. They are one of the highest operating cost for most merchants.

The legislation would require big banks to give merchants a choice of two different networks to process credit card transactions. Visa and Mastercard – which control over 80% of the market – currently price-fix swipe fees charged by banks that issue cards under their brands.

The legislation would require large banks (those with more than $100 billion in assets) to provide merchants a choice of two different unaffiliated networks for processing transactions (e.g., NYCE, Star or Shazam).

Giving retailers network choices would spur competition between them and result in lower interchange fees for merchants, which could be passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices.

A. Our payroll deduction was discontinued. Now what?

Q. Earlier this year our health system discontinued the option of payroll deduction. This has significantly impacted our sales. Have others experienced this and how have they rebounded? Thank you. – Beth Meadows, Marion General Hospital, Marion, OH. 6/21/23

UPDATE: Thank you for all the comments regarding payroll deduction. Since that last message, we have been in talks with our payroll team to consider the option of a one-time deduction through an automated system that is already set up in our cafe area. We are hopeful this will work out and will bring back at least a portion of the lost sales.

In addition to this, we did institute a “two-week hold” option to allow associates to come back when they have their credit cards or cash to pay for their product, that has been positively received.

Cindy, you asked why it was removed, and the short answer is automation. The process we had in place was more manual. Thanks again for the help. – Beth Meadows, Marion General Hospital, Marion, OH. 8/21/23

Our payroll deduction was discontinued before COVID. We now give hospital employees a 10% discount and volunteers 20%. That seems to help somewhat. – Helen Travis. 7/18/23

We have payroll deduction and it is a large percentage of our sales from staff. We do not have a limit as to how much they can put on payroll deduction. We did have to work to mainstream some issues on the backend for this to work more efficiently. – Jan Friedman, Unity Point, Dubuque, IA. 7/26/23

We use GemPay for our deductions. – Tricia Rochman, Carbondale Memorial Hospital, Carbondale, IL. 154 beds. 7/26/23

With a $25 minimum we allow team members to do payroll deduct up to 3 pay periods. If amount is $200 or more they can get it out of 4 pay periods. If we don’t have a sale going on, team members and volunteers always receive 10% off most items. Payroll is our highest form of payment. – Jessie Davis, Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal, MO. 99 beds. 7/19/23

76% of shops reported having payroll deduction in 2021. It can account for 40-50% of shop sales.

Losing payroll deduction is a serious blow. Employees will not spend as much. We have talked to administrators and are trying to revive it. Shopify has Shop Pay so we may try this payment plan. – Mary Ann, St. Francis Hospital Gift Shop, Columbus, GA. 350 beds. 7/19/23

We had our payroll deduction stopped due to software being dated. Our solution was to go with a professional POS system (i3 Verticals Counterpoint). We know that 65% of sales are payroll deducted, so it was critical.  – Mary Ann Brunette. 7/18/23

We currently still have payroll deduction through Quick Charge / Kronos payroll system. We do up to 3 pay periods depending on the amount the spend. Very successful. – Ramona Kennedy, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary, Ogdensburg. 115 beds. 7/18/23

Our gift shop has always deducted the full amount of the purchase made in the gift shop during one pay cycle. The limit for full-time employees is $150 and part-time is $75. PRN (as-needed employees) are not permitted to use payroll deduction. We have not had feedback that this deters spending. The only area that will carry over multiple pay periods is the pharmacy and the local uniform store. – Andie Kirchner,  Spartanburg Medical Center, Spartanburg, SC. 524 beds. 6/21/23

Why did admin decided to remove payroll deduction? You will need to preserver and find other means to make up the sales (e.g., online store, fundraisers/events, remote kiosk, etc.) Make a case for one or more of these by outlining your sales loss due to this decision. – Cindy

Four Instagram engagement stickers that actually work

First, if you are not marketing your shop on social media, start today! We understand it requires time, but having an online footprint validates your shop. It shows shoppers that you’re a professional retail establishment worthy of their time and dollar. And, it is FREE!

Instagram stickers

Even if you only post once a month, it means you’re regularly engaging with customers. This helps drive them to your store. If you have an online store, social media is a seamless way to drive customers to your website.

What are engagement or poll stickers?

Instagram stickers are dynamic graphic elements that are added to Instagram Stories. Some are animated, some are clickable, and others allow users to interact directly with your Instagram Story.  Stories with a question or poll allow your audience to vote or answer. They are a terrific way to boost interest and engagement.

Instagram Stories allow you to post as many videos and photos as you want to – without impacting your Instagram grid aesthetic. Letting you step away from your potentially carefully curated, on-brand feed and show off a different side of your personality – as well as sometimes alerting people to your new grid posts.

With approximately 86.6% of Instagram’s users posting Stories every day, Stories enable you to still reach your audience even when they don’t have lots of time to scroll through their newsfeed.

But how do you make your Stories stand out? Be fun? Engaging? Here are some engaging sticker ideas to try…

QUIZ STICKER

The Quiz sticker asks your audience a question with up to 4 answers to choose from. Choosing an answer will either turn green for correct, or red for incorrect.

Quiz Sticker, Instagram Story

POLL STICKER

Poll stickers are pretty straightforward – add the sticker to your Story with a question and your audience can vote on the answer they want.

EMOJI SLIDER STICKER

The emoji slider is perfect for surveying your Instagram audience about their interests, likes, dislikes, and more. To use it, ask a question, place the emoji slider on your Story, and encourage your followers to drag the slider left or right.

COUNTDOWN OR SCHEDULE STICKER

Use the countdown sticker and schedule stickers to alert shoppers of coming events and sales. Generate anticipation and excitement. With the schedule sticker viewers can tap it to set a reminder for the upcoming event. Cool!

Cargo volumes steadily growing

Imports have been down year-over-year, but August 2023 numbers are expected to be the best in a year.

The ports in the US will handle around 22.3 million TEU in 2023, a 12.8% year-on-year drop. This makes it the second consecutive year that has seen a decline in cargo imports from an annual all-time high of 25.8 million TEU in 2021.

Import cargo volume at the nation’s major container ports is expected to hit its highest level in nearly a year this month as retailers stock up for the winter holidays, according to the Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said, “There are always supply challenges to be faced but holiday merchandise is flowing into the country, and we expect to see a smooth shipping season ahead of the winter holiday shopping season.”

Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett said double-digit year-over-year decreases in cargo volume this year have come even though consumer spending and U.S. employment have increased.

“Dollar figures for international trade show imports remain in a year-over-year decline and cargo volume shows the same,” Hackett said. “The discrepancy between rising growth in sales and declining cargo volumes is happening because retailers are working their way through inventory built up over the last 12 to 18 months. Cargo growth should resume as inventories are depleted.”

Q. Who is a good vendor for large art prints?

Q. Where do you purchase large art prints to sell in your shop? Looking for a good vendor for bigger art prints, not necessarily the word/phrases. Like the big sunflowers, fields of wheat, abstract art, etc. to sell to our customers. We are in a smaller town, and we don’t have places to look for such items. I have purchased several from Gift Craft, but I am looking for new ideas and vendors. Thanks – Jaci Gottschalk, HaysMed Hospital, Hays, KS. 6/21/23

Gift shops still reopening three years post-pandemic

SHELTON, WA – The Mason General Hospital Gift Shop, operated by the hospital’s auxiliary to raise money for scholarships, has reopened after being closed for three years due to the COVID pandemic.

The shop reopened June 30, and is open from 10am – 4pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Most of the volunteers are seniors, which factored in how long the shop was closed following the worst of the pandemic, said volunteer Monica Bates.

During the past three years, the auxiliary has hosted some in-house one-day sales, including one last month that offered items at 75% discount. “There was a lot of dust collecting,” Bates said.

DISCUSSION

SHOP SIZE

300 beds. 4/18/23

Q. Our payroll deduction was discontinued. Now what?

Earlier this year our health system discontinued the option of payroll deduction. This has significantly impacted our sales. Have others experienced this and how have they rebounded? Thank you. – Beth Meadows, Marion General Hospital, Marion, OH. 6/21/23

Our gift shop has always deducted the full amount of the purchase made in the gift shop during one pay cycle. The limit for full-time employees is $150 and part-time is $75. PRN (as-needed employees) are not permitted to use payroll deduction. We have not had feedback that this deters spending. Changing seasons. How to move from one time of the year to another.

by Amy Meadows, Smart Retailer / Jul 2023

That old saying about how Christmas is more than just one day a year rings especially true in retail. Placing orders, planning floor moves, and managing merchandising strategies all begin months in advance.

Ideally, your holiday display plans should begin now, as you lay the groundwork for fall. With a few shrewd choices here and there, you can install a holiday “base” as you decorate for fall. Before you can say “pumpkin spice,” you will have made headway into the fourth quarter.

If you have that figured out, congrats! But perhaps you are exhausted once peak season is over. Is there a way to make a smooth transition to spring without excessive effort?

Fall becomes holiday
Let’s look at foundational fall décor. With a tweak here and some additional details there, it can easily convert to Christmas without recreating the entire install.

For a current take on trends in holiday décor, I turned to one of my go-to resources, Melrose International. In addition to consistently updating their assortment and trend forecasts, Ken Fetgatter leads the design team responsible for setting up all the showrooms (no small undertaking).

He shared how protea, twigs, and cinnamon-hued glass ornaments can be elegant, unique additions to the traditional holiday mix. I recommend getting a head start with fall trim that features branches (manzanita is a personal favorite) and protea (dried, preserved, or silk). Once added to evergreen trees, wreaths, and sprays, this subdued palette of pale pinks, cream, and gold looks gorgeous. Bring in the greenery and incorporate the décor combination already in place. Save time and energy, one wreath at a time!

Another trend concept for this transitional approach is pine cones! Pine cones are the perfect staple for both fall and holiday, blending well with other dried foliage or winter greenery.

Perhaps you want to consider a nontraditional direction. At the STYLEMAX spring show, I enjoyed simple but effective muslin swag, embellished with spring blooms along the top edge. It had the slightly BoHo vibe reflected in the clothing line and was the ideal size and weight for easy shipping and installation. Bonus: it is easy to “Christmas-ize.”

Eliminating rust and browns from a fall garland provides a more emphatic combination of dark greens and gold. I highly recommend following @pastesfcollage for creative and innovative products.

In the case of moss panels and boxwood squares, the simple addition of gold, silver, or red will move the season forward with minimum effort and expense.

Maybe you would prefer to avoid red and green — or variations of them — and keep a completely neutral palette with colors such as white, cream, tan, and honey. Again, branches, dried foliage, and the fail-proof birch log work for fall, the holiday season, and occasionally spring.

Moving into spring
In the opposite direction, the arrival of spring means a fresh start, brave blooms, and sunnier skies. Whereas holiday displays are typically the opposite of “less is more,” spring is usually somewhat scaled down. So, how can you create an impressive, full-scale wintery scheme and still get a head start on the first quarter?

Keep it light and bright. This is where birch logs earn their badge of excellence. With its pale, silvery hue, birch moves effortlessly from winter to spring. Use bright pops of green, lavender, and rose — no glitter, no gold. If you used cream or white as your Christmas season backdrop, you are in good shape.

Here is the bottom line. As retailers, you have incredibly busy schedules and lengthy to-do lists. Plan and look for ways to lighten the load. Assessing the “recipe” or elements used in your seasonal décor can help identify strategies and shortcuts. The board Christmas with a Twist on Pinterest @windowsmatter is a resource for innovative ideas, nontraditional combinations, and materials.

A. Is your shop large enough to hit sales targets?

Last month, Wendi Vela, Shop Manager at UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA asked:

What is the smallest square footage you have seen for a gift shop in a larger hospital (e.g., 645 beds)? We will be losing our existing space of ~700 sq ft (+ back office and storage) and are currently evaluating our (very limited) options. The new space will likely be a much smaller footprint (300-500 sq ft).

THANK YOU! We want to thank everyone who responded. Your input helps this community grow and succed.

Information is based on the consultant’s general experience, knowledge of gift shop management, and data from sponsored national surveys.

Q. Do you have a good vendor for vinyl die cut stickers?

Q. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a vinyl die cut sticker vendor? Our campus includes a lot of students and those stickers are trending with our students right now. Would love to find someone who has some medical themed or state themed stickers. – Alyssa Feller, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, MS. 6/26/23

I Heart Guts has a terrific collection of anatomy stickers, plus pins, buttons, keychains, and funny socks. They are a loyal advertiser in this issue (see their “Product Pick”) and were terrific to work with. – Cindy

Gift shop cited for “combustible” candles 😮

DISCUSSION

385 beds.

GIFT SHOP MESSAGE BOARD

In 2020 we moved the newsletter online and incorporated a comment/discussion feature. The goal was to create a ‘community’ where readers could “ask questions, bounce ideas and just overall support from other managers”. We made it so readers could post pics, reply to specific comments, include links, get notified when someone replies to your comment, and so on.

At this time, we also started building a dedicated message board, similar to Quora or Reddit. Even going as far as buying a domain (see below). Ultimately, we felt it would not get enough use or ads to cover the costs ($1200/year). A paid membership model did not seem feasible either.

We considered a Facebook Group but there were limitations. It would exclude retailers who don’t use Facebook, the search function is terrible, can’t navigate or search embedded images and threads, no archive options. We also wanted a platform that did not require a login and was incredibly simple. Nonetheless, we’d love to revisit this if readers indicate enough interest. Please let us know here or comment below.
